01 / Origins and memory

Three milestones in the town’s history

Three milestones to place the history in context. The first written reference to a brotherhood is not the origin of the whole celebration.

  1. 1668

    Independence from Lorca

On 3 March 1668, Huércal and Overa became independent of Lorca and gained town status. Residents funded the purchase from the royal treasury.

  2. 1739

    The new parish church

The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was planned in 1709 and completed in 1739. Its twin towers and José Ganga’s altarpiece form part of the town’s Baroque heritage.

  3. 1983

    Tourist recognition

In 1983, Holy Week gained Tourist Interest status. This recognises its tradition and is separate from the confirmation of an annual programme.

A Huércal-Overa tradition

The Holy Burial stops

The traditional stops of the Holy Burial belong to Paso Negro: the procession pauses outside houses historically associated with the ritual. The brotherhood connects these stations with its Franciscan origins.

La Borriquita’s palm branches

Palm and olive branches accompany La Borriquita on Palm Sunday. Its connection with the chapel of Santiago distinguishes it from the other Passion brotherhoods.

A Huércal-Overa tradition

Noche de las Lumbres

Noche de las Lumbres commemorates the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the new parish church on 8 February 1739. It is a separate celebration from Holy Week and provides context for the town’s religious life.
